During this test procedure, the reference axis is formed by the cylindricity (circumferential surface) of an actual bearing point, e.g. at a transmission shaft. Possible roundness deviations of this cylindrical surface can be included in the radial runout measurement result in accordance with the surface angle. This test is thus more functional than measuring between the tips.
